A critical path analysis, or our plan to win, **is our best guess at the necessary milestones we’ll reach on the way to winning our campaign. Given how we’ve cut our issue, the demands of our target, and the spectrum of support, what steps need to happen in order to win?

Common milestones include:

• Measurable earned media coverage from key reporters & influencers (Two articles that use our framing of the problem and solution in the local paper)
• A level of active support measured in specific actions taken, especially those requiring more sacrifice, risk, or commitment (Taking a public action at work, recruiting another person to attend an in-person event, signing up a certain number of people for a lower-commitment ask, like signing a petition or making a phone call, etc.)
• Public endorsement by a secondary target or representative of a key constituency
• Primary targets agree to a lower-level demand (funding an official study or survey on a given problem, rather than endorsing our plan to fix it)

When written as a statement, a critical path analysis might look like:

We believe that on the way to our campaign victory, over the next six months, we will first achieve __________, then by __________ date, we’ll secure  __________, then by __________ date, we’ll achieve __________, and finally __________.
